Yes, it's easier said than done. And it may take a minute to add some movement to your life. Start small, especially if you've been less active lately. You've probably read it before somewhere on the Internet, but here's the short list:
  • First and foremost, wear comfortable shoes! Don't start doing this list wearing high heels, floppy sandals, etc.
  • Park your car away from the entrance of grocery stores, malls, post office, etc. Before you start your trek to the front door, pause and take a breath for four (4) seconds, hold for seven (7) seconds, and exhale for eight (8) seconds ... OK, go. Relax your shoulders, stand tall, chest open and continue breathing. Soften your eyes, relax, enjoy your surroundings, listen for sounds around you, even traffic can be relaxing if you let it.
  • Stretch! Yes, it is that simple ... stand still like a mountain. Stand tall, but with relaxed shoulders; abs should be slightly engaged. Breathe. Raise your arms over your head in a sweeping motion, reaching for the sky. If you're comfortable doing it, bend at the hips and with your back flat, reach for the floor. If you can't reach it, that's just fine.
  • Hopefully you're doing your own house and yard work ... doing what your daily chores require IS moving! Reaching for that can of tomatoes, or squatting to pick up something your dropped. Be aware of what you are doing ... exaggerate your movement to really enjoy the stretch. Breathe!
  • Sounds pretty easy, right? So, let's add something else. Take a walk after meals. I'm not talking about a run, but a leisurely walk. Enjoy your neighborhood or just walk in your yard. Go ahead, it's good for you and you'll be moving!
  • Want another one? How about joining a class? The trick about really enjoying a class is you can do everything you try at your own speed and capability! Don't over so it, just try to enjoy it. Silver Sneakers? Yoga? TaiChi, Pickleball? Neighborhood walk?
