These were taken in our car enroute to our new home in Everglades City, Florida. Seatbelts weren't a 'thing' at that time so we laid the backseats down to create a play area for you and Sarah while we traveled 1,300 miles. NOTE: there was no digital back in 1981 so all these pictures had to be developed at a photo store.
We moved to Everglades City, Florida in March of 1981. One of the first things you noticed at 18 months old, was two large eye hooks in the ceiling of our carport. You pointed and your father told you it was for a swing. The day after we moved in to our house your father and I put up a swing for you. We just knew you wouldn't be able to balance on the single rope swing but you surprised us both. I gave you a little push and you tried to sign "more" but found taking your hands off the swing wasn't a good idea. You were able to right yourself and never lost control of your swing. Then, we pushed you higher and higher. In just a matter of a week or so you were pumping your little legs yourself ... but still needed help getting up onto the swing.
In the background are the mangroves along the Barron River. A bit around the corner is the Everglades City Rod and Gun Club. I didn't realize its history until I looked it up.
Here's a story for you, which I've told many times. It was a rainy afternoon in Everglades City and you and Sarah were playing in your room. It was very quiet, which is never a good thing where children are involved! I peeked into your room and you and Sarah were sitting on the floor, facing each other and sitting Indian style. She had a tissue at her side and was picking your nose for you. You had your head tilted back so she could see and she gathered her boogered tissue and disposed of it. Your allergies always created a crusty nose ... I guess it was Sarah's way of helping. Now, how sweet is that?
